So there are a couple of older threads about this model on the site, but now that they've been out a while, what do you all think about them now?

While we were in Baker last weekend we stopped by the local Yamaha/Polaris shop and they had two of them, a white one and an orange one. They also had a standard (very plain jane) green Rzr as well.

We've had our 2-up Can-Am for about 4 years now and we've never liked it much. The problem is we've never ridden any utility quad that was "fun" like our sport quads. With the sport suspension and Maxis tire and wheel package, it looks like the Rzr S ought to at least handle fairly well.

I know a couple of guys with the 800 motor in the Polaris Ranger and they both have had issues with it. That's one thing about the Can-Am that I do like, the Rotax V-Twin.

I drove one quite a bit in Winnemucca and really liked it. Not sure I'd like it much for anywhere else though. I have a hard enough time fitting my 55 inch wide Rhino through most trails. Another 5 inches would be even tougher. If I were to buy one, it'd be the standard 50 inch RZR.

I have an S. I really like racing it. big willow is a blast, dunes not so much. WORCS racing with it is a riot. I just got home from the WORCS race in WA. 10 cars showed and I won the overall. I put the thing through hell in the race, table tops, a few double jumps, whoops at full gas, and ruts, roots and rocks in the woods. I have raced it in 4 WORCS races each 45min motos and not had a problem, driving it like I stole it.
Mine has an aftermarket cage and seats but the drive train and motor are stock.

There is the can-am SxS now too if you would prefer that motor....

Pretty much what others have said. The S handles way better and would be a blast on the sand (from what ive read/seen/heard).

However the width is an issue on a lot of trails around here. My standard Rzr with wheel spacers has gotten hairy on the trails around Idaho and i KNOW I wouldnt have fit an S on a lot of those. From what I gather you and your wife would do a lot of woods riding so thats definitely something to consider.

Also, you can pick up a standard rzr now for 7-8k. An S is quite a bit more. That extra $$ you could put into mods and such.

EDIT: Also, that saved coin could go to a long-travel system, tires and such and you would have a better setup than a stock S.

Thanks everyone for your inputs. I am convinced that the "S" model just wouldn't work out well for the types of mountain trails we have around here. Should do fine for most desert stuff however.

They have a couple of special edition RZR 800 models that simply upgrade the tires and wheels and throw on some blingly looking graphics. They've also made some subtle changes for 2011 to address some of the existing customer base issues. They even have an option for electric power steering although I'm not all that impressed, especially given the price.

I also checked out the Can-Am side-by-side and it's way out of our price range. I also noted that Can-Am has dropped their entire race ready 450 line-up. I guess the competition was better/harder than they thought! I only rode the machine once, but I'll stick with my YFZ 450, even if it is 5 years old now!

Sorry, I should have been more specific. While the DS is still advertised on the Can-Am WEB Site, we've been to dealerships in three states now that won't stock them because they don't sell without discounting them well below dealer cost.

I don't follow the circuit much anymore, but I still get the feeling that Yamaha cleans up in most classes.

There are plenty of trails the S will fit on but there are plenty of trails that it wont. The way the officals are cracking down on machine width, I would choose the regular version over the S.

Actually no . While Yami is still out there strong its not cleaning out the circuit .
Yamaha isnt even sponsoring alot of rider this year either . Honda till dominates in the Privateer sector. KTM has alot of riders out there this year as well. Can Am is by leaps and bounds spending the most of there factory riders .

I'd like one but at the price I don't think I'll swing it, especially for a 2 seater when you can get the rzr 4 for about the same price. I'm still hauling my adult daughter in the back of my Rhino so I think the 4 seater would be great if I could swing the price. A friend of mine from California bought one and he loves it.
