I think the best bang for the buck AWD car is going to be a Eclipse GSX or an Eagle Talon tsi. The 4G63 engine is a tough little boosted engine that has ALOT of aftermarket support. |
Yeah Cliff, I agree with you, right up until you do more to it than change the oil in the stupid thing. 4G's are capable of IMMENSE power and are fairly reliable in stock form. But they are a biotch to work on and all of the ones I've been around, quite a few, have problems. Its always one thing or another, even the ones with just a few bolt ons seem to be tempermental, even just for a daily driver. |
You are correct, they can be tempermental little things but when they run right hold on...

I wouldn't touch a Mitsu with a ten foot pole. I have yet to see one go longer than 100k and not knock or burn/leak oil. The electrical systems aren't the greatest either. Don't get me wrong, I've seen nice ones that really run, but not for the long-haul.
In my opinion, nobody's lookin out for a boosted Justy that'll smoke all four. 1950lbs, 300hp, AWD.........ultimate sleeper This forum (http://subarujusty.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=memberjustys&action=display&thread=1276) talks about a 750hp (!) Justy. Umm, damn! |
IMO Mitsubishi makes by far the best 4 banger gas engines out there. Take a good look at EVO's.... It doesnt take much at all to make them run 10's or quicker. With an o-ringed head and upgraded studs they are tough wth lots of boost.
Why would anybody want a Subaru Justy... You might as well mod out a Geo storm or something.... As you can probably tell I am not a fan of the scooby-doos...

How about an old AMC Gremlin with a 401 V-8? |
I really doubt he will be able to buy much of a muscle car for under 6k... But if it had to be an AMC car I say go AMX or a Rebel Machine...
I also like the 66-67 shoebox Novas, or a 68-69 Dodge dart...

Either way, I don't think he wants a fire breathing 10 second ground pounder. Something in stock form that is just fun to drive, am I correct? There is a lot out there to choose from. Mustangs, Camaro's, and a host of others can all be had for a fair price. I've even see a few Viper's for near $15K....hehehe
And a 401 Gremlin "X" would be a hand full at the least. Gremlin-X's were AMC's NHRA FX-D class factory racecar. Yes, they made a few Gremlins from the factory that had 401's. Just like there were a few Pinto's that had 302's in them from the factory. They are hard to find info on but they were there.
Speaking of Pinto, I don't know your particular tastes but the Pinto is one of the most underrated platforms out there. The news media gave them a bad rap for having inadequate protection around the fuel tank. But, Pinto's with the Ford 2.3L I4 actually handle VERY well. They have standard disc brakes, rack and pinion steering and are light and agile. That 2.3 is VERY buildable also. Ive had a few Pinto race cars and, I hate to say it, they are more like a sportscar than a grocery getter.

Cliff,
I'm not a ricer by any means, but just about everyone and their sister has driven or atleast seen a finned-out or tin-can-mufflered Eclipse/WRX/Evo/Civic running around town. I'm merely suggesting something out of the ordinary. With that said, I'm also a recovering Gremlin owner. Those did come factory with a 304ci V8 option. A healthy 304/401, and you're going to have issues keeping tires on the rear end and keeping it in a straight line! Sadly enough, $6k won't touch an AMX, unless its a shell-only.
Miata platforms can be fun, and they're pretty good canyon carvers without any modifications. If it were my money and wanted to keep things simple, I'd do as others have suggested and pick up a FOX-body mustang. My favorite year/model was the 1989 LX 5.0 convertible. They had the cleanest lines, were 300lbs lighter than the GT without all the extra body cladding, and can be made to move and handle very easily.

I saw on the net somewhere that a fella dropped a Nissan Vq40E, same as the Frontier truck engine, into a older 250x or something of that nature and it looked like hell, but ran like a scolded dog.
